A total of 326 papers were received by April 23rd, from which an authoritative preliminary jury chose 30 essays. The assessment took place in three categories – winners were chosen from among basic school pupils, secondary school students, and adults.
According to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the large number of entries confirms the wish of the people to actively participate in the formation of Estonia’s future.
The essay contest was organized by the Ethics Center at the Unversity of Tartu in cooperation with the Academic Advisory Board, Akadeemia magazine and the Ministry of Education and Research.
Also discussed at yesterday's meeting was the topic of the transition of Estonia’s Russian-language schools to partial Estonian-language instruction.
