Press Statement by President Alar Karis at the Press Conference in Chisinau

Dear Mr Prime Minister, colleagues and journalists!

It´s great to be back in Moldova, thank you for your warm welcome and hospitality.

We discussed the wide range of current challenges ahead and looked forward to the future.

Moldova finds itself at a crossroads, a situation we know well from our own journey towards the European Union. We had voices advocating for both directions, by the end of the day – only one direction was a clear pathway towards lasting peace and prosperity. 

Today we know that becoming a member of the European family was not just the right choice, it was the best choice. During our referendum around 65% voted in favour of joining the EU, today the support of the EU is more than 80% and among young people over 90%. The EU has brought everything that was promised and more. Most importantly, it has brought freedom to always choose our destiny and possibility to dream big. 

The people of Moldova are struggling with inflation, hard economic conditions, yet you have demonstrated an unwavering support for Ukrainians by providing humanitarian aid and hosting countless refugees. This solidarity is an expression of your kindness and Moldova's deep-rooted commitment to regional stability and the shared democratic values of the European family.

Now we are committed to making sure the Baltic voices resonate strong and clear when it comes to discussions on your choice to join the EU. 

I wish to tell you that from the Budjak steppes to the Baltic Sea – your vote matters. We wish to see the enlarged area of freedom and stability.

Bond with the EU and you´ll secure your future in the most prosperous, democratic union in the world. 

Estonia stands firmly with you in this journey, we praise the progress you have made so far. We are committed to supporting Moldova's continued efforts to strengthen democracy, rule of law, and good governance, the key prerequisites for the EU membership.

Dear people of Moldova,   

Use this wonderful pivotal moment and vote yes to alignment with values that will unlock the doors to Europe. 

In 2004, we embraced European values and today we shape the future of European family. This family protects our culture, language, people and land. 

This family has increased our happiness over the past 20 years – by supporting our farmers, developing the transport and energy infrastructure, providing business opportunities by bringing widest open market, investing in to education and science cooperation, healthcare, sustainability and various other vital sectors crucial for a well-functioning state. 

Today, drawing from our experiences, we extend a helping hand to other nations aspiring to join the European family, as we know it by heart that they will benefit from this. 

To the people of Moldova, I wish open mind to vote for new opportunities, freedom and peace!
