President Kersti Kaljulaid met with the President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu today in Kadriorg. The Head of State of Kosovo is on a two-day visit to Estonia. President Kaljulaid assured that Estonia continues to support visa freedom between Kosovo and the European Union and is happy to share our experinces in conducting reforms, in EU integration and in conducting a digital transition.

According to the Estonian Head of State reforms are mainly in the interests of the people of Kosovo themselves, because they improve the investment climate and help to raise the standard of living. “30 years ago the situation of Estonia was also difficult, but we could always count on our international friends. Therefore we have a moral obligation to help those, who are now trying to reform their countries and to build rule of law. Estonia supports the further EU enlargement and wants to keep the doors open for those who share our values and principles and are interested in reforming their society and economy. Estonia is happy to contribute in the development of Kosovo in the areas, where we can help,” President Kaljulaid said. The Estonian Head of State assured that Estonia supports visa freedom between European Union and Kosovo and emphasised that if all the conditions are met then citizens of Kosovo should be allowed visa free movement in the European Union.

„We are carefully monitoring the European Union facilitated dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. It is important to reach a binding agreement approved by both sides, to ensure the stability of the region and keep both countries on a path to the European Union,“ President Kaljulaid said.

Cooperation in the fields of education, economy and digitalisation were also discussed at the meeting. The President of Kosovo is accompanied by a business delegation with interests in cooperation with the Estonian IT sector.

The President of Kosovo will also meet the Speaker of the Parliament Jüri Ratas, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and the Head of the EU Commission of the Estonian Parliament Siim Kallas. She will also visit the Vabamu museum and the e-Estonia Briefing  Centre. On Friday President Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu will visit the Telliskivi Creative Hub, will meet the State Secretary Taimar Peterkop and visit the company Pipedrive. This is the first visit of a Kosovo Head of State to Estonia and the first bilateral visit of the current Head of State.

Estonia was one of the first countries to recognize Kosovo’s independence in 2008. Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu was elected President on April 4 2021.
