President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Warsaw with the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, with whom she discussed the security situation in the region, but also spoke at length about energy security and economic co-operation.

Poland is Estonia's strategic ally, we share the same understanding of regional security issues, said President Kaljulaid after the meeting. "Estonia and Poland are both strong supporters of our Eastern partners and use every opportunity to raise their security concerns, but also call on them to reform their countries. Every nation has the right to choose its own path by democratic means, but unfortunately we can see repression in nearby Belarus, ”the Head of State emphasized. The security situation in the region also needs careful attention, despite Russia's announcement of the withdrawal of its troops from the Ukrainian border.

Economic co-operation between the two countries was also discussed at the meeting. Poland is Estonia's largest trading partner in Central Europe and an increasingly important market for our companies. Given the effects of Covid-19, economic recovery, the green and digital revolutions will be important for both countries in the coming years. "We see opportunities for cooperation with Poland in the field of new technologies. We have agreed at European level that every citizen has the right to a digital ID, and here I call on Poland to make their electronic ID compatible with the European Union's e-IDAS system. And also to begin using our x-road, similarly to Finland, Iceland and Ukraine, ”said the Head of State.

The heads of state of Poland and Estonia spoke separately about the green transition. "We stand here side by side with Poland – you have coal and we have oil shale. One is black and the other is brown, but both pollute. When using the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Fund, we must be able to ensure the transition to greener energy, but social side effects must also be addressed, ”President Kaljulaid emphasized. Here, too, Estonia is interested in deepening economic cooperation, because the larger Polish market is a good opportunity for our entrepreneurs to amplify their activities.

Estonia and Poland both actively contribute to the activities of the Three Seas Initiative, and the first investment has been made in Poland and Estonia from the investment fund that has grown out of it, a fund helping entrepreneurs grow their exports and business in Eastern and Central European countries.

President of Estonia is on an official two-days visit to Poland. The visit of the Estonian Head of State to Poland takes place at an important and symbolic time, because today, exactly one hundred years ago, the first Estonian diplomat was accredited in Warsaw.

It is customary to exchange gifts during an official visit. The Polish head of state received an electric kickscooter Äike, which is fully developed and manufactured in Estonia. It's manufactured from 42% recyclable materials and is 92% recyclable after its lifespan which is the best in the world so far.
