President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Pärnu with Veronika and Valeri Tsepkalo, who belong to the Belarusian political opposition.

„Through free and fair elections the people of Belarus demand the end to violence and respect for basic democratic rights. Belarusians must have the right to choose their own path and here we show them solidarity,” President Kaljulaid said.

The meeting focused on the events that have taken place in Belarus in the past few weeks and what can the European Union do to support the sovereign Belarus and its citizens. “The continuing violence towards peaceful protesters and threatening its own citizens with military force needs to stop. Estonia and me personally will do everything in our power to keep the international spotlight on the events in Belarus,” the Head of State stressed after the meeting.

A representative of the Belarusian opposition and former diplomat Valeri Tsepkalo was a presidential candidate discarded from the Belarusian elections. Her wife Veronika then joined Svetlana Tikhhanovskaya's campaign with her staff.
