President Kaljulaid to embark on a work visit to Brussels and Paris

18.11.2019

President Kersti Kaljulaid will meet today in Brussels with Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, the Prime Minister of Belgium, Sophie Wilmès, the President-elect of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and President-elect of the European Council, Charles Michel. Tomorrow President Kaljulaid will speak at Fortune Global Forum 2019 about Estonia’s development into a digital society.

The meeting with the Secretary General of NATO will focus on the leaders of NATO on 3-4 December in London; Estonia wishes the summit to deliver a clear message on the uniformity and solidarity of NATO. For Estonia, the implementation of agreements made at previous meetings is important, as this will mean updating defence plans and air defence issues. The security of the region will also be discussed.

Three Seas Initiative summit, which will take place in Estonia on 16-17 June 2020, will be discussed with the President-elect of the European Commission and the President-elect of the European Council. The priority issues of the new Commission, such as negotiations on the long-term EU budget for 2010-2027 and climate concerns will also be discussed.

At the meeting with the Prime Minister of Belgium, the two leaders will discuss bilateral relations, the meeting of NATO leaders in London, the agenda of the European Union and cooperation in the UN Security Council, as both Estonia and Belgium will take part in the Council’s work in 2020.

Since 1995, the FORTUNE Global Forum has been hosted by the editors of Fortune in various major cities across the world; the Forum creates a valuable opportunity for the CEOs of the world’s biggest multinational companies and economic leaders to actively engage in discussions.
