President Kaljulaid to pay a state visit to Kuwait, accompanied by a business delegation

President Kersti Kaljulaid will start the week with a three-day state visit to Kuwait to promote digital cooperation between the two countries and the interests of Estonian entrepreneurs in the Persian Gulf region.

During the state visit from 4-6 November, the Head of State of the Republic of Estonia will meet with the Emir of Kuwait, sheik Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Prime Minister sheik Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, and the speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim. Ay the end of October, a memorandum of cooperation was concluded between Estonia and Kuwait to develop the digital sphere; the memorandum will focus on e-governance and cyber security; therefore, the meetings will focus on promoting cooperation in the aforementioned spheres. Kuwait is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council at the moment and the Estonian Head of State wishes to share their experience and find opportunities for cooperation – as Estonia will start its two-year membership of the UN Security Council in January 2020.

The Estonian Head of State will be accompanied during the state visit by an official delegation that will include, among others, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu, Enn Eesmaa, and the head of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Toomas Luman. The visit will be also attended by a representative business delegation of 14 members that includes representatives of information technology, defence industry, fintech and furniture industry.  At the meeting with the Chairman of Kuwaiti Chamber of Commerce an Trade the options for promoting the activities of Estonian entrepreneurs in the Gulf Area will be discussed.

The last Head of State to pay a state visit to Kuwait was Lennart Meri in 1993.
