President Kaljulaid discussed opportunities for increasing cooperation between Estonia and Japan with Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan

President Kersti Kaljulaid, who is currently on a work visit to Japan, met today in Tokyo with the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. The main topic discussed at the meeting was the creation of new opportunities for enterprises from the two countries and cooperation in the sphere of digitisation and e-governance.

At the beginning of the meeting the Head of State expressed condolences to Prime Minister Abe and the people of Japan following the devastation from the typhoon that ravished the island last week.

“Several essential steps have been taken place in relations between Estonia and Japan over the past year. The EU and Japan's Economic Partnership Agreement entered into force this year and agreement on tourist visas involving the right of employment was ratified by the Riigikogu a couple of days ago. These are specific steps that will, hopefully, provide new opportunities for the enterprises of both countries to strengthen their economic relations,” said President Kaljulaid after the meeting. Japan is one of the Asian countries with the largest number of e-residents and Japanese e-residents have already established more than 200 enterprises in Estonia.

The Head of State and the Prime Minister discussed the opportunities for closer cooperation in the sphere of e-governance and President Kaljulaid confirmed the willingness of Estonia to share its experiences. “The success of Estonia relies on a single and common data exchange layer, X-Road, and Estonian enterprises are already importing this experience to Japan,” said the Head of State.

President Kaljulaid also congratulated Prime Minister Abe at the start of the Reiwa era and successful preparations for the Olympic Games, which will take place in Tokyo next year.

President Kaljulaid is on a four day work visit to Japan where she attended the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito. The Head of State has also visited a number of enterprises and given two public lectures. She will return to Estonia tomorrow afternoon.
