President Kersti Kaljulaid, who was present today in Kiev, Ukraine at the swearing into office of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and later held a work meeting with the new president, emphasised the importance of anti-corruption efforts and enhancing the reliability of the economic environment in Ukraine.

President Kaljulaid congratulated President Zelensky on taking office and expressed to her counterpart Estonia’s continued support for Ukraine’s effort in joining the European Union and NATO. “Ukraine is a part of Europe and Europe must not forget that there’s a war in Europe and Crimea is still occupied,” said the President of the Republic.

The Head of State also stated that the western world is tensely observing the first steps taken by the new head of state in filling key positions and shaping policies. “An economic environment that does not favour foreign investment and, in spots, hesitant implementation of anti-corruption measures are problems that interfere with the development of Ukraine and in enhancing the well-being of its people. The Head of State who just took office has a good opportunity now to show that Ukraine is remaining on its chosen track and is continuing to combat these problems,” said President Kaljulaid after her meeting with her Ukrainian colleague.

The President of the Republic is today on a work visit to Ukraine where she took part in the swearing into office of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and met with the Head of State. In addition, a work-related meeting of all three presidents of Baltic States and Rick Perry, the United States Secretary of Energy, took place.
