President Kersti Kaljulaid signed a resolution in Portugal today to appoint the Chairman of the Estonian Centre Party, Jüri Ratas, as a candidate for the position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia.

The Head of State has met with all the leaders of the parliamentary parties and, as a result of these consultations, she will make a proposal for the formation of a Government to Jüri Ratas. “It is now the task of Jüri Ratas to form a government, which – as a whole and each of its members separately – will honour our Constitution and respect the values that have been laid down in our Constitution,” said President Kaljulaid.

A fortnight ago, when addressing the opening session of the Parliament, the Head of State emphasised that Article 12 of the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia says it all – everyone is equal before the law. No one may be discriminated against on the basis of nationality, race, colour, sex, language, origin, religion, political or other views, property or social status, or on other grounds.

Jüri Ratas will now have 14 days to give an overview of his principles for the formation of a new government to the Riigikogu and to gain the support of Parliament.
