Next week President Kaljulaid will travel to Portugal for a state visit

President Kaljulaid and Georgi-Rene Maksimovski will travel to Portugal for a state visit next Tuesday and Wednesday, where they are scheduled to meet with the head of state, take part in a business seminar, and visit various institutions and companies.

“Estonia and Portugal are bound by common values - we are partners in the European Union and allies in NATO. We have had long standing cooperation between the two countries in the field of security, Portuguese fighters have repeatedly guarded our airspace and we are also working together in cyber security. Our entrepreneurs have also become increasingly interested in the Portuguese market, which is well reflected in the size and composition of the business delegation. Portugal, in turn, has shown interest in our e-government experience and digital solutions. This state visit is a good opportunity to strengthen existing contacts, create new ones and reinforce these ties even further,” said Lauri Kuusing, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the President.

The Head of State's two-day visit includes meetings with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Antonio Costa, Speaker of Parliament Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues and Minister for Innovation Mariana Vieira da Silva. In addition, President Kaljulaid will visit the Champalimaud cancer treatment centre, the Estonian companies Monese and Pipedrive, which operate in Portugal, Lisbon Naval Base, the shipbuilding company Arsenal do Alfeite and the NCIA NATO training centre.

The Head of State will be accompanied by a representative business delegation of 25 members, Major General Martin Herem, Commander of the Defence Forces; Rene Tammist, Minister of IT and Entrepreneurship; Toomas Asser, Rector of Tartu University; Aivar Sõerd, Member of the Riigikogu; and Toomas Luman, Head of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The state visit is the most celebratory form of communication between the two countries. As a rule, the President of the Republic of Estonia makes 1-2 state visits and hosts the same number per year.

The Head of State will travel to Moscow from Lisbon for a working visit and return to Estonia on Friday, 19 April.
