President Kaljulaid, who is on a work visit to the United States of America, met late last evening with the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to discuss security and defence co-operation issues, the situation in Ukraine, hybrid threats and co-operation between the two countries.

“Both houses of Congress have offered strong, cross-party support to Estonia, NATO and trans-Atlantic relations,” said President Kaljulaid at the meeting and thanked speaker Pelosi and the members of the Congress for their support shown to both Estonia and Europe and for the sanctions imposed on Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

According to the Head of State, to date such an attitude and standing up for common values has included the steadily increasing defence-related support of the US to Estonia; hopefully, this will continue to grow further in the future. “We must not forget, even for a moment, that liquidating the defence ability gaps in our region will contribute to the enhanced security of Estonia, Europe and the United States of America.”

Apart from Speaker Pelosi, President Kaljulaid met yesterday at the Capitol Hill with several congressmen; the resulting discussions mostly focused on security issues. “Estonia and the representatives of both houses of the US Congress share quite a similar understanding of the challenges we face and their respective solutions,” said the Head of State after the meeting.

Today is the last day of President Kaljulaid’s work visit to the United States of America. The Head of State will return to Tallinn tomorrow night.
