President Kaljulaid on a work visit to the United States of America from today until Thursday

President Kaljulaid is on a work visit to the United States of America where she will meet with the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, give a number of public presentations and take part in the work of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. In addition, she has scheduled a number of meetings with various heads of states and delegates assigned with the UN to discuss Estonia’s candidacy for the UN Security Council.

“Allied relations with the United States of America have been and will remain the foundations of our security policies, both bilaterally and in NATO. Estonia, Europe in general and the United States of America will all win from strong and value-based trans-Atlantic relations,” said Foreign Policy Adviser to the President, Lauri Kuusing.

Today, President Kaljulaid will meet in New York with the President of Trinidad and Tobago and the Vice President of Kiribati, and there will also be a number of discussions with delegates of various countries with the UN. The main topic of the meetings is Estonia’s candidacy to the position of a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the UN in 2020-2021.

On Tuesday, the Head of State will speak at the high-level discussion of the President of the UN General Assembly, give a presentation as a co-chair at an event organised by the Every Woman Every Child UN initiative for women and children and host delegates to the UN at a reception to celebrate the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia in the evening. Bilateral meetings with the president of Nepal and Vice President of Columbia will take place on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, President Kaljulaid will meet in Washington with several members of the Senate and with the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. The Head of State will also give a speech on security and trans-Atlantic relations at the reputable Brookings Institute think tank. On Thursday, President Kaljulaid will meet with members of Congress and take part in a discussion with experts at the Heritage Foundation think tank.

The President of the Republic will return to Estonia on Friday night.
