President Kaljulaid to the Head of State of Austria: as a presidency trio, we can achieve more together

"I am pleased that the relations between Austria and Estonia are becoming closer. We have enjoyed good co-operation as a trio during the Presidency of the European Union and while six months represents a short period for taking long steps, then 18 months working in co-operation will give all of us a better opportunity to achieve important changes," said President Kersti Kaljulaid at her meeting today with the President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen.

"I am quite sure that the visit of President Van der Bellen and the business seminar taking place tomorrow within the framework of the visit will provide new opportunities for co-operation between Austrian and Estonian companies and will serve to enhance trade between our countries," said the Estonian Head of State. We have excellent options for co-operation within the sphere of information technology, as Austria has already become our active partner in the cyber defence sector, added President Kaljulaid.

At the meeting, the Estonian ancestry of President Van der Bellen, which will take him to the island of Saaremaa – the place where his parents met – was also discussed.

The heads of state also discussed, in length, the migration policy and energy security of the European Union, along with relations with Russia and the Eastern Partnership. The two also discussed Ukraine, where President Kaljulaid visited last week.

The President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, and Mrs Doris Schmidauer are on an official visit to Estonia. Tomorrow, President Van der Bellen and President Kaljulaid will plant an oak sapling into the Estonian Republic 100 oak-park in Tamsalu, open the Austrian-Estonian business forum and the Lennart Meri conference in Tallinn. On Saturday, President Kaljulaid and President Van der Bellen will pay a visit to Saaremaa.
