President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid said today while visiting Locked Shields, the largest and most advanced international live-fire cyber defence exercise in the world, that the excercise provides an excellent opportunity for political level decision makers to practice managing large scale cyber attacks.

The Estonian head of state received an overview of the scenario and technical and strategic level aspects of the exercise. "Locked Shields has over the years evolved into a really awesome undertaking that among other things demonstrates how interconnected cybersecurity and vital services are," said President Kaljulaid.

President Kaljulaid added that usually it is the technical level specialists and officials who participate in these kind of excercises although it is obvious that in real life it is the political level decision makers who will have to manage the crises and make quick decisions. "Therefore the Locked Shields exercise provides a big and so far largely unused opportunity for ministers and other political level decision makers to practice management of large cyber crisis in a realistic environment," President Kaljulaid noted.

Locked Shields 2018 is happening this week and more than 1000 cyber experts from 30 nations are participating. This annual exercise is a unique opportunity for national cyber defenders to practice protection of national IT systems and critical infrastructure under the intense pressure of a severe cyber attack and is organized by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE).
