President Kaljulaid met with the Head of State of Malta

President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Rome with the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. The heads of state discussed co-operation between the two countries and the experiences that Malta gained during its Presidency of the European Council.

"I thanked the Head of State of Malta for the work they have done over the last six months as the Presidency of the European Council. We will take over the baton this week and the experiences of Malta are highly valuable," said the Head of State after the meeting.

The meeting focused on the migration crisis of the EU and the experiences of Estonia in building up a digital society. "Migration issues are more acute in Southern Europe, as the situation along the middle section of the Mediterranean migration route remains critical. Migration issues will also be among the most important during Estonia's Presidency of the European Council," stated President Kaljulaid.

The Head of State also introduced the priorities of Estonia for its Presidency term. "We discussed digital issues at length, as these horizontally align with all the issues on table. The experiences we have gained in building up a digital society continue to generate intense interest and Malta is no different," she added.

Co-operation between the two countries and possible joint projects were also discussed at the meeting. In Rome, the presidents of the two countries today took part in a Women's Forum and a discussion that focused on peace and security.
