Estonia’s preparations for the arrival of NATO’s allied forces discussed at the National Defence Council

Today, the National Defence Council was summoned by the President of the Republic; at the meeting, the Minister of Defence and the Commander of the Defence Forces gave an overview on the arrival of additionally deployed NATO allied forces in Estonia, according to the resolution adopted by the Alliance last year at NATO's Summit in Warsaw.

"The arrival of the allied forces and our preparations are all working out as scheduled, and I would like to acknowledge everyone who has contributed to these efforts," said President Kaljulaid. She added that it is obvious that the arrival of more than 1,000 members of the allied forces will be a challenge, primarily during the first year; therefore, we need to be ready for possible unforeseen issues. "I do believe that quite soon we will see various malicious information operations, fake news and other efforts that are all aimed to create confusion and the dissemination of incorrect information. Above all, I recommend that we keep our minds sharp and exercise a healthy dose of source appraisal with respect to all sorts of "sensational" news pieces," said President Kaljulaid.

According to the Head of State, the arrival of a NATO battalion in Estonia this spring represents a measure that will considerably enhance the dimension of deterrence.

"However, the deterrence will never be complete. It must comply with realistic risk appraisal, and it will have to be adjusted according to the changing security environment. This work will also continue once the allies are here," stated President Kaljulaid.
