President Kersti Kaljulaid today sent a letter of congratulations to the 45th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, on his inauguration.

The President of the Republic conformed that good relations with the USA are very important for Estonia and expressed her conviction that good co-operation in the sphere of defence and cyber security between Estonia and the USA will also continue under the leadership of President Trump.

According to President Kaljulaid, she shares the position that countries must contribute sufficiently to their defence ability to ensure NATO's collective defence, and she's proud that Estonia is one of the countries that spends 2% of its GDP on defence and also contributes its Defence Force members to missions that ensure international security, including the fight against terrorism.

Europe and the USA are facing a number of shared challenges; we need strong trans-Atlantic co-operation, as Europe and the USA can achieve more together, added the President of the Republic. Together, we will stand for democratic values, human rights and liberties all over the world.

The Estonian Head of State wished the Head of State of the United States of America all the best on his inauguration and success in his new position.

Full text of the letter:

Dear Mr. President,

Please accept my sincere congratulations on the occasion of your inauguration as the 45th President of the United States of America. I wish you every success in carrying out your duties in this important office.

Estonia attaches great importance to its strong relations with the United States. You stood by us in the darkest of times by refusing to recognize our forceful incorporation into the Soviet Union. For almost fifty years your policy of non-recognition helped keep the hope of freedom alive for the Estonian people. Today, Estonia is a thriving democracy and we are grateful for your country's commitment and support.

During your term in office, we look forward to furthering our close bilateral ties in many key areas, including defense and cyber security. We also look forward to working with you as a steadfast NATO ally.

Mr. President, I am certain that under your leadership the vital transatlantic link between Europe and the US will be maintained and nurtured. I am also certain that your commitment and contribution to European security will continue. We need strong US leadership.

We also need close transatlantic cooperation at a time when Europe and the United States face many common challenges, including terrorism and migration, and I am convinced that the most effective way to meet these challenges is by continuing to work closely together. Indeed, Europe and the United States can and will achieve much more together than separately.

Mr. President, I agree with your view that an adequate level of defense spending is necessary in order for NATO to continue to effectively provide for collective defense and to contribute to global security. We are proud to be one of five NATO members that meet the defense budget target of 2% of GDP and we strongly encourage other allies to do the same.

We are also proud to be a provider of security in places where people have faced, and still face, real danger. Indeed, Estonians served shoulder to shoulder with US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and we are ready to fulfil our commitments in the future by contributing whenever and wherever the need to do so should arise. You can always count on Estonia.

We will also continue to stand up for freedom around the world and to actively promote democratic values and human rights in close cooperation with the United States.

Mr. President, I am certain that collectively we can building a better future for our countries and peoples and I look forward to working with you towards meeting this aim. Once again, on behalf of myself and the Estonian people, please accept my congratulations and best wishes on your inauguration.

Kersti Kaljulaid
