President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Kadriorg with Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, the Speaker of the Knesset, Parliament of Israel, who is currently on a two-day visit to Estonia.

Cultural and economic relations between Estonia and Israel and co-operation in the sphere of e-governance and cyber defence were discussed at the meeting, along with views on the peace process in the Middle East, relations between the European Union and Israel, and the fight against terrorism.

President Kaljulaid stated at the meeting that Estonia and Israel have good and long-standing co-operation in the spheres of culture, education and research. "Cultural relations between Estonia and Israel are very strong and the best example here is MustonenFest, which takes place in both Tallinn and Tel Aviv and brings together several Estonian orchestras, choirs and soloists," said the Head of State.

According to President Kaljulaid, economic co-operation between Estonia and Israel could pick up some speed, and both states could also learn from each other's experiences in the spheres of cyber defence and e-governance.

Speaker Edelstein expressed his pleasure with the fact that members of the Estonian Defence Forces contribute to peace keeping operations in the Middle East. President Kaljulaid and Speaker Edelstein stated at the meeting that the fight against terrorism is one of the biggest challenges facing democratic countries today.
