"Germany is one of our closes partners in the European Union and NATO, and we have bilateral relations in the spheres of economy, digital co-operation, education, research and culture," said President Kersti Kaljulaid after her meeting with the President of Germany, Joachim Gauck.

At their meeting, presidents Kaljulaid and Gauck discussed bilateral relations between Estonia and Germany, the future of the European Union following the Brexit referendum result and the security situation in Europe.

The Estonian Head of State stated that the bilateral relations between Estonia and Germany are very good and consistent, and both countries are characterised by a shared, common understanding of the changed security situation. "Over the years, we have developed wide-based co-operation in the sphere of defence. Germany is, without doubt, one of our most active European allies in ensuring the security of the region, and it consistently contributes to air security in the Baltic states," said President Kaljulaid.

President Kaljulaid stated that Germany has been the fourth biggest trading partner for Estonia over the last two years after Finland, Sweden and Latvia. "Germany is a target market of great interest for Estonian entrepreneurs. This was also confirmed by representatives of the Estonian start-up companies operating in Germany who I met with last night in Berlin," said the Head of State. According to the President, Estonia and Germany also share similar views on the European Union's economic issues in general.

Presidents Kaljulaid and Gauck also mentioned co-operation in the digital sphere during their meeting. "I can say, with assurance, that the German government has demonstrated significant interest in Estonia's IT-developments and e-governance solution. We aim to initiate real e-governance co-operation projects," added the Estonian Head of State.

During her visit, President Kaljulaid also met with the President of the Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, representatives of the German-Baltic friendship group of the Bundestag and members of the German Council of Foreign Relations.

Yesterday, the Head of State placed white roses at the Berlin Wall Memorial and met with the Estonian community in Berlin.

President Kaljulaid will return to Estonia tonight.
