02.03.2025

President Alar Karis, at the invitation of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer, discussed European and Ukrainian security via video call with the leaders of Latvia and Lithuania ahead of today’s meeting of Europe’s major powers. The leaders jointly affirmed that the most crucial aspect is to assure Ukraine that our support will continue and that Europe is prepared to increase military aid to Ukraine. Prime Minister Starmer provided an overview of his recent visit to Washington.
President Karis emphasized that for the security of Ukraine and all of Europe, it is essential that the war ends with a just and lasting peace. “In addition to further military aid, it is also necessary to increase defence spending and preparedness across Europe.”
The Estonian head of state also welcomed the discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine led by the United Kingdom and France. “Ukraine’s security is primarily a matter of European security, and European countries must be the main contributors to these potential guarantees. However, the support from the United States is also necessary,” President Karis stated.
President Karis confirmed that Estonia is ready to discuss security guarantees. “However, these guarantees must be credible and deterrent,” he added.
