President Karis on the 1000th day of the war: Ukrainians and Estonians are united by the will to win
19.11.2024
The Ukrainian people are united by the will to win. It is a source of strength that keeps them defending their homes, their country and their freedom. But this is also what unites us, Estonians, with Ukrainians. We understand the meaning of freedom and how fragile freedom can be. Our history has demonstrated that freedom is never self-evident. Often, freedom must be gained by force, with common efforts and a fierce will.
Estonia’s support for Ukraine is unfaltering. We have been supporting Ukrainians in repelling Russia’s war of aggression for more than 1000 days, and we are prepared to support them for another 1000 days – and longer, if necessary. Our commitment is based on the belief that every nation has the right to decide the future of its country without interference.
I met with Ukrainian military personnel training in Estonia and learnt about their will to win and how they defend their country despite the losses and privations of war. Our nations are united by a common history, a common present and a common future – both in Europe and in NATO.
The horrors of the war are not yet over and that is why we must continue our support. The Ukrainian people know they are not alone in their struggle. They have allies, friends and partners standing by their side.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone in Estonia whose invaluable efforts are supporting Ukraine – be it by provision of ambulances, rescue equipment, drones, winter supplies, military training, assistance to displaced people or any other help. Every Estonian’s contribution to helping Ukrainians counts. Every contribution helps to maintain the Ukrainian nation’s resistance and will to win.
These last 1000 days have been a painful reminder that freedom is a fragile value that must be protected. Ukraine’s struggle is not just a struggle by and for Ukrainians – it is a struggle to uphold democratic values worldwide.
