President Kaljulaid at meeting with Trump: the contribution of countries does not depend on their size

06.07.2017

President of the Republic, Kersti Kaljulaid, met the President of the USA, Donald Trump, in Warsaw today at the summit of Eastern and Central European Countries to discuss energy issues, trans-Atlantic co-operation and security issues in the region.

President Kaljulaid focused on the importance of cyber security in her address, which was given during the discussion of the heads of state. She emphasised that while all countries have their own interests, we are still linked to each other, despite the size of our countries. "The European Union and the USA will together form a global power with more strength," said President Kaljulaid. She added that this is what makes close co-operation with NATO, where the United States of America has a leading role, so important.

"Every country has a role in this co-operation and Estonia has fulfilled its role. Yes, it is known that we contribute 2% to our defence related expenditures, but our contribution to the sphere of cyber security is probably even more important. People and enterprises moved into the cyber sphere long time ago and governments should not be among the last to take this step. To date, Estonia is the only digital society in the world to demonstrate that despite their size, all democratic countries can contribute to making us all stronger and mutually more beneficial. Both in a physical sense and within cyber space," added the Head of State.

On Thursday, the Summit of the Three Seas Initiative will take place in Warsaw. The Summit will bring together the heads of state of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria and Croatia and, on this occasion, the President of the United States. The Head of State of Estonia will take part in a discussion focused on the future of Europe and transport, infrastructure and energetics, and she will have a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Hungary.
